Welcome to my online portfolio of Landscape and Wildlife images!  My name is Howard Slavitt.  I have enjoyed practicing color landscape photography for over thirty years and I have lived in Lafayette, California since 2010.
During the pandemic in 2020 when I was working at home full-time, I started to focus on photographing the street and neighborhood where I live.  I planned my days as much as possible around getting outside at or before sunrise to enjoy nature before I began to work and often ended my days in the same manner, and always brought a camera with me.  I feel very lucky to live in Lafayette because of the beautiful nature that surrounds us here, the wildlife that I see many days, and the proximity to downtown San Francisco (a city I love).
I decided that the primary focus of this website would be to show images that I've taken in and around Lafayette.  It's the area I know best, and its where I now typically spend three to four hours a day hiking and exploring, often with my dogs.  A couple of my galleries also display landscapes and wildlife from other locations ("Afar") - Japan, Morocco, France, and the American Southwest, and Alaska.  I have taken many thousands of landscape images over the years.  But what I can offer that is different than most is a vision of the particular city, neighborhood and surrounding area where I live.  Many of the images were taken on the street where I live, and many images were literally taken within a stone's throw of my house.
Before embarking on a thirty year legal career (from 1994 to 2024), I was an aspiring film-maker and graduated from the University of Southern California with a masters degree in cinematography and film/video production.  My thesis film, "Summer Rain," won one of two student academy awards given in 1989 for dramatic films.  I feel fortunate that I was able to retire in 2024 and that I am now able to spend my days exploring Lafayette and other nature and wildlife areas in the Bay Area.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you'd like to share your reactions to any of my images.  I am selling framed prints, and more fully describe the process of making prints in the "Prints" webpages.  I believe that the quality of color photographic prints we are able to make today using color digital printing is extraordinary with respect to color accuracy, palette, the range of values from light to dark, and longevity of the prints.
     Enjoy!
